"Ego" Organic Domaine Cazes

Côtes du Roussillon Villages Rouge Ego, Domaine Cazes

France – 2020

15% ABV

Tasting Note: Rich, fruity red from southern France, juicy with mulberries and blackberries and with a sweet hint of toffee on the nose.

Food Matching: Great to accompany quail skewers with dried fruits, poultry in sauce and grilled meats. It can be easily kept up to 5 years.

Vineyard: This Côtes-du-Roussillon-Villages AOC wine is made from an assemblage of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre, all from a clay-limestone soil, with rolled pebbles from the foothills of the Corbières.

Vinification: Once harvested, the grapes are de-stemmed, then the fermentation lasts 4 weeks, followed by a malolactic fermentation. The extraction is reinforced by manual pumping over and punching twice a day. The wine finally benefits from a one-year aging in vats and an 18-month storage in bottles in an air-conditioned cellar. It can be easily kept up to 5 years.

Awards and Press News: Taking home not only Gold but a Critics' Choice award, this drew praise from judges for its "cheerful blueberry fruit and a drying lick of spice', began team leader Jade Koch, who thought it "generous without being over the top, with a balanced, considered and thoughtful palate, great minerality and inky length'. Hide Above's Alonso Abed found it "herbal, savoury and full bodied, with some star anise', while New Street Warehouse's Tanguy Martin described "an explosion of fruit and spices, mixed with the right amount of tannins - great value!'.
