This is Riesling with some serious character.

Daniel Fries is making some seriously exciting wines in Winningen in Germany's Mosel Valley. Forget any preconceptions about Riesling being sweet – this is a beautifully dry, concentrated and energetic white from some incredibly steep, old slate terraces overlooking the Mosel.

The grapes for the Terrassen Riesling come from the steeper sections of Winningen's centuries-old vineyard terraces. Everything is picked by hand – partly because on slopes like these, there really isn't much of an alternative.

The individual parcels are vinified separately before being blended together. Fermentation happens naturally in large, old wooden foudres, followed by ageing on the lees to add texture and complexity.

The result is a Riesling that manages to be both incredibly fresh and surprisingly textured. There's loads of ripe lime and citrus, backed up by a lovely creamy texture and an unmistakable wet-slate minerality. The finish is long, dry and seriously refreshing with a mouthwatering citrus-pith bite.

Why We Like It

If you think Riesling means light and sweet, this is the bottle we'd give you to change your mind.

Daniel Fries makes a much broader and more textural style of Mosel Riesling. You still get all that brilliant acidity and slatey minerality, but there's considerably more weight and texture through the middle.

It's one of those wines that gets more interesting as it warms slightly in the glass. Don't serve it absolutely freezing – give it a decent wine glass and let it show you what it's got.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Ripe lime, fresh citrus and an almost immediately recognisable wet-slate minerality.

Palate: Juicy and energetic with ripe lime and citrus fruit, creamy lees-derived texture and masses of crushed-rock minerality.

Finish: Long, dry and bracing with citrus pith, fresh acidity and lingering slatey minerality.

Food Pairing

Brilliant with oysters, shellfish, sushi, tuna and simply cooked white fish. That combination of citrus, acidity and minerality makes it particularly good with fresh seafood.

Or forget the food altogether – get it properly chilled, open it on a Friday evening and you'll be doing pretty well.

Product Details

Producer: Weingut Daniel Fries

Wine: Terrassen Riesling Qualitätswein

Vintage: 2024

Country: Germany

Region: Mosel

Village: Winningen

Grape: 100% Riesling

ABV: 12.5%

Bottle Size: 75cl

Closure: Cork

Suitable For: Vegans & Vegetarians

Winemaker: Daniel Fries

Buy Daniel Fries Riesling Online

Buy Daniel Fries Terrassen Riesling 2024 online from The Strong Water Co., independent wine merchants based in Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire.

We deliver wine throughout the UK, including Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, the Scottish Highlands and the Scottish Islands.
