2018 Douro Old Vines Reserva, Quinta do Crasto

Douro Old VinesReserva, Quinta doCrasto

Portugal – 2018

14.5% ABV

Quinta doCrasto is rare in Douro (the home of Port wine) as a producer perhaps more known for its regularnonport wine. This the wine that helped Miguel and his family and the Douro region as a whole for making extremely high-quality red wines. Made from native grape varieties this is a very satisfying wine.

Tasting Note: Intense and lifted aromas of cigar box, tobacco leaf, spices, cedar and vanilla, combined with fresh dark berries and ripe plums. A rich, full and round palate of great balance, displaying rich Douro berry fruit characters and a delicious savoury edge, with integrated tannins and a great length of finish.

Food Matching: Ideal with hearty stews and roasted joints. Also excellent with game.

Vineyard: The grapes (25-30 different varieties), coming from parcels of old vines, were taken to the winery in 25 kg plastic boxes and inspected on a sorting table on arrival. The soil is schist and the vineyards are planted onsocalcos (terraces supported by stone walls), with a Southeast facing aspect.

Vinification: The grapes were then completely destemmed and slightly crushed. After this, the must was transferred to temperature-controlledstainless steel tanks. Once the alcoholic fermentation was completed, the grapewere gently pressed using hydraulic presses. 85% matured in French oak barrels and 15% in American oak for about 16 months.
