Pinot Nero DOC, Colterenzio
Italy – 2018
Tasting Note: Elegant, subtle Pinot from northern Italy offers the fragrance of redcurrants and black cherry, with ripe berries in the mouth, restrained by a lovely acidity.
Food Matching: Perfect partner to light starters, roast partridge, rack of hare, Peking duck, and meaty fish. Serve cool, 16 °C.
Vineyard: Grown on pergola-trained vines and more recently planted vertical espalier-trellised vines. The Schreckbichl / Girlan vineyards are on west facing slopes at altitudes between 420-450 metres. Soils are morainal mixed with clay and eroded porphyry.
Vinification: The crushed grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of approx. 25° C. The skins are kept constantly immersed in the developing wine by pushing them down gently. The new wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and is refined in concrete tanks and large wooden casks for at least six months.
Awards and Press News: Chalking up another Gold for Colterenzio, this Pinot Nero drew praise from judges for its ‘delicate nose of wild strawberry and raspberry, with sweet cinnamon spice, some woody herbs and generous fruit’, said Flat Three Restaurant’s Heesoo Kang, who found that its ‘silky texture and delicate tannins support good concentration, fruit intensity and length’. A similarly impressed Gabriele Galuppo of Theo Randall at the InterContinental found it ‘fruit driven, with hints of violet and rose, with a well-defined, elegant palate’. Gold Medal, Sommelier Wine Awards 2019
