Rosso di Montalcino Il Poggione
Tuscany - Italy
Rosso is the lighter, less aged wine from the clone of Sangiovese known as Brunello and this is lovely: concentrated and elegant, with black cherry, blackcurrant and soft-serve vanilla on the nose, with coffee and black fruit in the mouth.
Food Matching: Moroccan spiced beef, grilled pork chops with classic barbecue sauce or steak with ham, proven and mushroom sauce can all be a wonderful match with this delicious red.
Vineyard: The winery's oldest vineyards, planted between 150 and 450 metres (490 - 1475 ft) above sea level. Brunello vines are planted with the cordon spur and doppio capovolto system of training.
Vinification: This wine is made exclusively from Sangiovese grapes, the same variety used for Brunello di Montalcino, which are harvested by hand in ten year-old vineyards on the property. Part of the wine ages for 12 months in medium-sized Allier oak barrels, and the rest in barriques. The wine completes its maturation period in bottles for 6-9 months before it is released.
