Sonoma Heritage Zinfandel, Rancho Zabaco
USA – 2017
Tasting Note: The Rancho Zabaco Heritage vines Zinfandel bursts with flavour. On the palate, this Zin offers juicy notes of blackberry, raspberry and boysenberry. Subtle hints of pepper round out the taste of this big and bold zinfandel. Grapes for this wine are selected from premier Zinfandel growing areas in Sonoma County, including Dry Creek Valley. In these AVAs, warm temperatures and unique soils create ideal conditions to grow intensely flavoured Zinfandel grapes. The 2013 growing season began early in Sonoma County, with consistent warm, dry weather leading the way to an early harvest. The steady conditions resulted in excellent colour and flavour intensity.
Food Matching: A great match to beef casserole, roast red meats and duck confit.
Vineyard: Grapes are selected from premier zinfandel growing areas in Sonoma Country, including Dry Creek Valley.
Vinification: With this wine, the aim for maceration was to extract colour and flavour during the first half of fermentation, and then drain and press the wine off the skins prior to drying. This technique encourages ripe, racy flavours from the Zinfandel grapes, while avoiding some of the harsher characteristics present in the skins. A small amount of Petite Sirah was blended in, giving this Zin a well-structured backbone.
