Chateau La Lagune Grand Cru Classè Haut-Medoc 1983
The 1983 vintage for Bordeaux was generally very good.
The growing season began with a cold winter and chilly, wet spring. Balmy conditions, however, settled in shortly after allowing for a near-perfect budburst and flowering and, despite a brief cool patch, temperatures than rocketed in July with the month even proving a record breaker and drought was a problem. Fortunately, however, these dry conditions were not to last as August, although still hot, brought plenty of rain relieving the vines. The warm wet conditions did, however, create a certain level of humidity which raised the risk of rot and certain diseases and some producers had to use sprays to protect the vines. Thankfully, September brought drier, sunnier conditions and a run of good days in the lead-up to the harvest ensured the resulting crop was in good health. The harvest began towards the end of September and ran through to October producing a generous but good-quality crop.
This benefited the Merlot dominated wines of Haut-Medoc and produced some stunning examples. This is superb order and ready to be drunk.
