Quinta do Retiro Novo 2009 Vintage Port

A proper mature Vintage Port – rich, dark, concentrated, and absolutely made for a cold evening, a good bit of cheese, and nowhere else to be.

Quinta do Retiro Novo sits in the Rio Torto Valley, right in the heart of the Douro. Owned by historic Port house Wiese & Krohn, this is a Class A-rated estate with some seriously good vineyards – steep slopes, low yields and old vines all helping to produce concentrated, characterful Port.

The 2009 vintage was particularly warm, with a hot August pushing the grapes to excellent levels of ripeness. Yields were lower than normal, but what they lost in quantity they certainly made up for in concentration.

In the glass, this is everything we want from mature Vintage Port. There's plenty of blackberry, bramble and dark fruit, followed by richer notes of chocolate, caramel and sweet spice. It's full-bodied and powerful, but there's enough freshness and structure to keep everything nicely balanced, leading into a long, warming finish.

At over 15 years old, the 2009 is now at a lovely stage of its life. There's still plenty of fruit and structure here, but bottle age has started to bring everything together beautifully.

Why We Like It

Vintage Port can sometimes feel like something you buy and then forget about for 20 years. Not this one. The Quinta do Retiro Novo 2009 is drinking brilliantly now while still having enough structure to continue developing in the bottle.

Open it after dinner, get a decent bit of blue cheese on the table and you're sorted. And if you're feeling particularly indulgent, it's also superb alongside a rich chocolate pudding.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Ripe blackberry, blackcurrant and bramble fruit with plum, sweet spice and hints of chocolate.

Palate: Rich and full-bodied with concentrated dark fruit, structured tannins, balancing acidity and notes of chocolate and caramel.

Finish: Long, warming and fruit-driven with lingering dark berries and sweet spice.

Food Pairing

Excellent with Stilton and other blue cheeses, chocolate desserts, fruit tarts or simply enjoyed on its own after dinner. For something a little different, try it alongside peppered steak.
