Domaine de Chevalier Rouge 2006, Cru Classé de Graves, Pessac-Léognan
2006 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge | Cru Classé de Graves | Pessac-Léognan
Domaine de Chevalier Rouge 2006 is a beautifully mature Cru Classé de Graves from Pessac-Léognan, Bordeaux. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend, producing a refined, structured wine combining mature black fruit with the smoky, mineral character for which the great wines of Graves are renowned.
Now with two decades of bottle age, the 2006 offers a superb opportunity to enjoy mature classified Bordeaux, showing developed complexity while retaining freshness, elegant tannins and impressive structure.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Complex aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, black cherry and blueberry are joined by graphite, smoke, fresh mint and subtle spice.
Palate: Fresh and beautifully structured, with dark berry fruit supported by fine, elegant tannins. Notes of liquorice, graphite, tobacco, smoke and spice develop across the palate, while balanced acidity provides freshness and definition.
Finish: Long, elegant and savoury, with lingering dark fruit, mineral notes and mature Bordeaux complexity.
About Domaine de Chevalier
Located in Léognan, Domaine de Chevalier is one of the celebrated classified estates of Graves and today forms part of the Pessac-Léognan appellation.
The estate is unusual in being surrounded by forest, with its vineyards planted predominantly on gravel over clay-gravel subsoils. These well-drained soils are particularly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and contribute to the distinctive mineral, smoky character found in the estate's red wines.
Domaine de Chevalier is renowned for producing Bordeaux of finesse and balance rather than sheer power, with its finest vintages capable of developing beautifully over several decades.
The 2006 Vintage
The 2006 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge is composed of:
- 60% Cabernet Sauvignon
- 30% Merlot
- 5% Petit Verdot
- 5% Cabernet Franc
The high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine its structure, spice and classic blackcurrant character, while Merlot adds richness and texture. Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc contribute additional aromatic complexity.
At 13.5% ABV, this is a classically proportioned Bordeaux with freshness, structure and elegance. After around 20 years of bottle maturation, the wine has developed the savoury and tertiary characteristics that make mature Pessac-Léognan particularly rewarding.
Food Pairing
A superb match for roast beef, fillet steak, beef Wellington, roast lamb, venison and other game. Its earthy, smoky character also works particularly well with mushrooms, truffle dishes and mature hard cheeses.
Serving Recommendation
Serve at approximately 16–18°C. As this is a mature 2006 vintage, stand the bottle upright before serving to allow any natural sediment to settle. Careful decanting for around an hour can help the wine open and reveal its full aromatic complexity.
