Scottish Spirit 2017 7 Year Old High Rye – Batch 2
One of the most unusual spirits bottled by Little Brown Dog Spirits – a Scottish-made, bourbon-inspired high rye spirit distilled at Invergordon.
Made from a mash bill of wheat, corn, malted barley and rye, the spirit was fermented, column distilled and matured for seven years in virgin American oak barrels.
Batch 2 is bottled at a powerful 58.8% ABV, with natural colour and without chill filtration.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Kirschwasser, pumpkin spice and pencil case.
Palate: Pancakes and maple syrup, candied violet petals and Soreen malt loaf.
Finish: Spearmint, rosemary and nutmeg.
Is it Scottish Bourbon?
Not legally – and that's what makes this release particularly interesting.
The spirit was produced at Invergordon by an American bourbon maker who was instructed to follow an American-style production process. However, enzymes were added during fermentation, meaning the resulting spirit cannot legally be classified as Scotch whisky.
Little Brown Dog therefore describes it as a High Rye Scottish Spirit Drink.
The result offers whisky drinkers the rare opportunity to explore what an American bourbon-style spirit produced and matured in Scotland can taste like.
