English wine isn't just about sparkling wine anymore, and Henners Native Grace Barrel Chardonnay is a brilliant example of just how good still English Chardonnay can be.

Henners select only their most expressive Chardonnay fruit for Native Grace. The wine is fermented and aged entirely in French oak barrels for nine months, using a combination of new and older oak.

The result is a much richer and more textural style than your everyday English white, but there's still plenty of natural acidity running through the wine. Think ripe orchard fruit, citrus and stone fruit wrapped around creamy, buttery and gently toasted notes from the barrel.

Why We Like It

This is proper Chardonnay – and a great demonstration of what England can now do with the grape.

There's enough toast, butter and creamy richness to appeal to anyone who likes barrel-aged Chardonnay, but it isn't a big, heavy oak bomb. The naturally fresh English acidity cuts through the richness and keeps everything beautifully balanced.

If you're normally drinking white Burgundy or cool-climate Chardonnay, we'd definitely give this a go. It's also a cracking bottle to put in front of someone who still thinks all English wine has to have bubbles in it.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Fresh apple, lemon and ripe stone fruit with subtle toast, butter and delicate spice.

Palate: Creamy and textural with orchard fruit, citrus and stone fruit alongside buttery richness and beautifully integrated French oak.

Finish: Long and fresh with a lovely citrus streak, gentle spice and lingering toasted oak.

Food Pairing

This is a brilliant wine for food. Try it with roast chicken, grilled fish, cheese soufflé, scallops or creamy seafood dishes.

We'd particularly like it with good Scottish seafood – pan-fried scallops or a nice piece of grilled fish with plenty of butter would be spot on.
