Yangarra Estate Shiraz
[Organic & Biodynamic]
McLaren Vale - Australia - 2016
Vegan, Vegetarian, Organic, Biodynamic & Sustainable
Undeniably McLaren Vale Shiraz, yet this is proof of how mind-blowing Australias Shiraz can be. Another delightfully cerebral red from Pete Fraser that belies any preconceptions of McLaren Vale. Beautifully exotic nose of plum, hoisin and chinese five spice, this is a vibrant self portrait of a vine perfectly at home. The gently sandy grip in the texture of this wine is entirely expressive of this single vineyard site. One of the best Aussie Shiraz to pass through our doors.
Excellent with tomato or meat based pasta dishes, also great with char-grilled vegetables or steak.
Shiraz adopts a very different form at Yangarra than the typical McLaren Vale style, and is more akin to the cooler climate styles. Our single vineyard estate has twelve individual blocks of Shiraz. Each block is defined by different aspects and subtle variations of the sand and Ironstone soils that overlie the ancient North Maslin Sands geological formation. The grapes for this wine came from 19-23 year old vines from Kangarilla, McLaren Vale. Approximately 10% whole bunches were used with 50% of the fruit remaining as whole berries. Mechanically sorted before going into open-top fermenters. Cold soaked until the onset of wild-fermentation, utilising the yeasts that naturally come in with the grapes from the vineyard. A careful regime of plunging and rack and returns. The resulting wine was kept on lees in 25% new French oak, 75% older French oak for 12 months. No fining, just filtration.
