2006 Château Léoville Barton | 2ème Cru Classé | Saint-Julien
2006 Château Léoville Barton | 2ème Cru Classé | Saint-Julien
Château Léoville Barton 2006 is a classic mature Bordeaux from one of Saint-Julien's most celebrated estates. Classified as a Second Growth (2ème Cru Classé) in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification, Léoville Barton is renowned for producing structured, Cabernet Sauvignon-led wines with exceptional ageing potential.
Now with two decades of bottle age, the 2006 vintage is entering a superb stage of maturity, combining concentrated black fruit with the cedar, tobacco, spice and savoury complexity expected from beautifully aged Left Bank Bordeaux.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Complex aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry develop into notes of cedar, tobacco, dried herbs, graphite and subtle spice.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied with excellent structure and balance. Cassis and dark berry fruit sit alongside cedar, liquorice, earthy notes and fine mineral character. The tannins have softened with age while retaining enough grip to give the wine impressive definition and length.
Finish: Long, refined and classically Saint-Julien, with lingering dark fruit, cedar, tobacco and spice.
Château Léoville Barton
Château Léoville Barton is one of the great names of Saint-Julien on Bordeaux's Left Bank. The estate was classified as a Deuxième Cru Classé – Second Growth – in 1855 and has been associated with the Barton family since the 19th century.
Léoville Barton has built its reputation on producing traditional, age-worthy claret, typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon. Its wines are known for their structure, freshness, precision and ability to develop remarkable complexity with extended bottle ageing.
The 2006 Vintage
The 2006 Château Léoville Barton is a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc.
At 12.5% ABV, this is a fine example of traditionally proportioned Bordeaux: concentrated and structured without excessive alcohol. After two decades of maturation, the wine is drinking beautifully now while well-stored bottles retain the structure and freshness to continue developing for many years.
Food Pairing
A superb wine for classic dishes including roast beef, rib of beef, roast lamb, venison and other game. It also pairs beautifully with beef Wellington, slow-cooked beef dishes, mushrooms and mature hard cheeses.
For the best experience, stand the bottle upright before opening to allow any natural sediment to settle. Careful decanting before serving is recommended for a mature Bordeaux of this age.
