A fascinating expression of Chinese Cabernet Sauvignon from Château Changyu Moser XV, grown in the Ningxia wine region at the foot of the Helan Mountains. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine offers an exciting glimpse into one of the world's emerging wine regions, combining intense fruit character with freshness and structure.

The vineyards sit at around 1,100 metres above sea level in Ningxia's dry desert climate, where hot days and cool nights help the grapes develop concentrated flavours while retaining freshness. The extreme conditions produce naturally small berries with a high skin-to-juice ratio, giving the finished wine impressive colour, concentration and varietal character.

Unlike the more oak-driven Cabernet styles found elsewhere in the world, the Helan Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is made with no wood treatment. The focus is instead firmly on the fruit and the distinctive character of the Ningxia terroir. The wine is made under the close supervision of Lenz M. Moser, Chief Winemaker at Château Changyu Moser XV.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Expressive and aromatic, with ripe blackcurrant, black plum and dark berry fruit alongside dried herbs and subtle spice. There is a lovely savoury edge, with hints of tobacco and green capsicum adding complexity.

Palate: Juicy and full-bodied, with concentrated blackcurrant and ripe plum at the core. The generous fruit is balanced by fresh acidity and ripe, rounded tannins, while subtle herbal and coffee notes add savoury depth. Despite its concentration, the wine remains remarkably fresh and approachable.

Finish: Clean and persistent, with dark fruit, dried herbs and a gentle savoury character lingering on the palate. The absence of oak allows the pure Cabernet fruit and Ningxia character to remain at the forefront.

Helan Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is a particularly exciting bottle for anyone interested in exploring Chinese wine. Ningxia has rapidly established itself as China's most important premium wine region, and Changyu Moser XV has played an important role in putting the region on the international wine map. This is Cabernet Sauvignon with a distinctly different sense of place – ripe, concentrated and generous, but with enough freshness and structure to keep it balanced.
