English Pinot Noir with real ambition. The 2024 Crouch Valley Pinot Noir is the second release from acclaimed winemaker Dermot Sugrue, following the extraordinary success of the inaugural 2022 vintage. Sourced from two vineyards in Essex, this is a beautifully crafted red that combines the elegance of Pinot Noir with surprising depth, concentration and structure.

The Crouch Valley is one of England’s warmest and driest wine-growing regions, and its clay-rich soils help regulate water throughout the growing season. The 2024 vintage enjoyed a long, slow ripening period, with grapes harvested unusually late in mid-November from Mason’s Point and Crows Lane vineyards.

Back at the winery in East Sussex, the grapes were fully destemmed and gently extracted to preserve the character of the fruit. One-third of the wine was matured in new French oak barriques, while the remaining two-thirds spent time in a large oak foudre from the renowned Tonnellerie Rousseau in Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy. Bottled after two winters at the winery, the result is a serious, classically styled Pinot Noir with a distinctly English sense of place.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Fragrant and expressive, with lifted cranberry and redcurrant aromas, alongside earthy nuances and a subtle hint of spice.

Palate: Deeply flavoured and beautifully composed. Bright red fruit is balanced by savoury, earthy character, with fine-grained tannins giving the wine impressive structure and texture.

Finish: Long and persistent, with a gentle peppery note and refreshing freshness that invites another sip.

Food Pairing

A natural partner for richer poultry dishes, particularly duck, pheasant, roast chicken and turkey. Its savoury character also makes it a wonderful match for earthy autumn ingredients such as wild mushrooms, truffle, beetroot and pumpkin.
