Bonkers V2 is the wonderfully eccentric English Chardonnay from Sugrue South Downs, the Sussex winery founded by acclaimed winemaker Dermot Sugrue. Born from the exceptional 2022 vintage, Bonkers takes a decidedly unconventional approach to English still Chardonnay, bringing together oak fermentation, flor ageing, controlled oxidation and a blend of multiple vintages.

V2 brings together fruit from 2022, 2023 and 2024, creating a wine that is noticeably pure, elegant and saline while retaining the creamy texture and gentle patina of oak that made the original Bonkers such a success. The fruit comes from vineyards across East Sussex, West Sussex and Kent, with the wine made entirely from Chardonnay.

Whole-bunch pressed and matured in a combination of French and American oak of different sizes and cooperages, with a small proportion of barrels allowed to develop flor, Bonkers V2 sits somewhere between classic white Burgundy, Chablis and the chalky freshness of the South Downs. It is unmistakably English, but with an international ambition.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Pure and precise, with chalk, lemon and fresh citrus alongside green apple and subtle white floral notes. Oak spice and brioche add a richer dimension, while time in the glass reveals hints of toasted nuts and creamy vanilla.

Palate: Silky and beautifully textured, with bright citrus and orchard fruit balanced by creamy oak, gentle brioche and a subtle savoury character from the flor influence. The wine has excellent freshness and drive, with a fine thread of salinity running through the palate.

Finish: Long, tapering and distinctly saline, with lemon, chalk, green apple and delicate oak spice lingering on the finish. Fresh, mineral and mouth-watering, with plenty of energy.

Bonkers V2 is a fascinating example of just how far English still Chardonnay has come. It is serious enough for the most traditional Chardonnay drinker, but the unusual winemaking and playful personality make it something entirely different from a conventional English white wine. Give it plenty of air and time in the glass – it develops considerably as it opens.
